DOE Grants AMS Over One Million Dollars In Support of Advanced Nuclear Reactors
Analysis and Measurement Services Corporation (AMS) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a prestigious grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of a $142 million funding initiative aimed at advancing clean energy. AMS is among 123 businesses across 34 states (and only 4 in the state of Tennessee) selected for this competitive grant program, designed to propel innovative solutions in the energy sector.
AMS will receive over one million dollars to adapt its advanced online monitoring (OLM) system for microreactors. Microreactors are factory-fabricated, transportable nuclear reactors intended for electricity production and thermal energy generation in remote and off-grid locations. These reactors are designed to operate autonomously, with minimal on-site staff, making the need for reliable, automated monitoring systems critical.
AMS’s OLM technologies employ artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and other advanced data analysis techniques to enhance the safety and efficiency of microreactors by providing continuous performance verification of critical sensors, processes, and components. This project not only supports the development and deployment of microreactors in the United States but also positions the American microreactor technologies for export to global markets. AI technologies promise to play a more prominent role in optimizing maintenance, diagnostics, and long-term asset management for the nuclear industry.
Mr. Brent Shumaker, Senior Engineering Manager at AMS and Principal Investigator for the project had this to say: “We are excited for the opportunity to apply our OLM technologies to microreactors and other advanced reactor designs. We are making a great impact with these technologies in the existing nuclear fleet, and we look forward to tackling the challenges to bring OLM into new nuclear reactor markets. We’ve got a great team here at AMS, and we can’t wait to get started.”
Dr. H.M. (Hash) Hashemian, President and CEO of AMS, commented, “This DOE grant is a testament to the innovative work our team has been doing in advancing online monitoring technologies. Our OLM systems will play a critical role in ensuring that nuclear reactors operate safely and efficiently, furthering the global transition to a low-carbon energy economy.”
