Dr. Hashemian Elected President of American Nuclear Society
H.M. “Hash” Hashemian, President and Chief Executive Officer of AMS, has been voted Vice President/President-Elect of the American Nuclear Society (ANS). ANS is a global organization established in 1954 to develop and apply nuclear science and technology for public benefit through knowledge exchange, professional development, and enhanced public understanding. Its members consist of nuclear engineers, scientists, and practitioners who help design, develop, operate, and maintain nuclear facilities for electricity generation, medical isotope production, and national and international defense.
Dr. Hashemian will serve as the ANS Vice President for one year starting in June 2024 and assume the position of ANS President in June 2025. He is an internationally recognized expert in peaceful applications of nuclear energy and lectures frequently around the world
on nuclear power plant operations, maintenance, and safety. He holds three doctorate degrees in engineering including a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, a Doctor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in computer engineering. He has worked for the nuclear and aerospace industries and U.S. government organizations including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Energy (DOE), Air Force, Navy, and NASA. He is the author of three technical books on nuclear power plant instrumentation and control system topics which have been translated and published in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian. In addition, he is the author or co-author of 22 U.S. patents and numerous standards and guideline documents for the NRC, DOE, Electric Power Research Institute, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Electrotechnical Commission, and International Society of Automation (ISA). He is a fellow of ANS, ISA, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
In addition to running his company and his responsibilities within ANS, Dr. Hashemian will continue to serve the greater nuclear community in his various roles, such as serving on the Tennessee Nuclear Energy Advisory Council (TNEAC) under Governor Bill Lee and as a member of the Civil Nuclear Trade Advisory Committee (CINTAC) under the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. His company, AMS, is a global nuclear engineering firm headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, with representatives in Austria, China, France, South Korea, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Since its inception in 1977, AMS has provided the worldwide nuclear industry with products, training, and services to measure the performance of control systems of nuclear power plants to ensure that they are brought to a safe shutdown quickly in case of an anomaly in the reactor system.
“I am humbled and honored to be elected for ANS President,” said Dr. Hashemian. “I promise my fellow members and the general public that I will work tirelessly to promote the tremendous benefits of nuclear science and engineering. I will focus on preserving the current fleet of U.S. nuclear power plants and promote the development and deployment of the new generation of nuclear reactors. I will also contribute to the current ANS attempts to attract the young generation to nuclear science and engineering, advance the diversity and inclusion objectives of our industry, and make ANS a more interesting and fun organization.”
