AMS Publishes Article in IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Journal on the Copper Catalytic Effect
AMS has recently published an article in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation journal. The article, titled Evaluation of Copper Catalytic Effects in Cable Insulation Polymers, is currently available online for early access and is set to publish in a journal later this year. Authors of this paper include:
- Trevor Toll – Lead Engineer of the AMS Materials Testing Laboratory
- Patrick Ward – Cable Engineer
- Codi Ferree – Materials and Research Engineer
- Casey Sexton – Senior Engineer and Manager of AMS’s Cable Services Group
The paper summarizes work performed in the AMS Materials Testing Laboratory to evaluate the copper catalytic effect, a phenomenon that occurs in electrical cable insulation polymers subjected to accelerated aging while in contact with copper metal. The results acquired from this research provided the information needed to characterize the copper catalytic effects observed in various polymers, analyze how this phenomenon affected the polymer degradation process, and compare and understand the differences in the properties of the materials.
This work relates to some of the research and development activities that have been conducted at AMS. The company recently concluded a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) titled Development of an In-Situ Method for Cable Condition Monitoring in Nuclear Power Plants that resulted in the development of Frequency Domain Reflectometry testing equipment for in-situ cable insulation aging in nuclear power plants.
AMS is currently working on another DOE funded project titled Development of Cable Aging Acceptance Criteria for Nuclear Facilities. Under this work, AMS engineers are developing acceptance criteria for mechanical, electrical, thermal, and chemical condition monitoring tests that trend with age-related degradation of electrical cables.
