Congratulations to AMS Senior Engineer EDWIN RIGGSBEE for completing his 25th year with the company! Edwin began his career at AMS on August 22, 1994, and over the course of 25 years has grown into one of AMS’s top-level senior engineers. Edwin has traveled extensively over the years to nearly every nuclear power plant operating in the United States, as well as many overseas in Europe and Asia.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Edwin has called Oak Ridge and Knoxville home for the last 40 years. He and his wife Nancy Ann have been married for 17 years and live in Northwest Knoxville. They have three grand-children.
Prior to working at AMS, Edwin worked 7 years as a Submarine Nuclear Reactor Operator in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Billfish SSN-676 from June 1986 to April 1991. His main responsibilities were the maintenance and operation of the submarine’s nuclear reactor I&C systems. Highlights of his military service were a 110-day Arctic expedition from March–June 1988, which included surfacing at the North Pole, refueling the submarine reactor and replacing the major reactor I&C systems at the Charleston South Carolina Naval Shipyard. His desire to seek out a professional career in the U.S. nuclear reactor industry was largely due to his shipyard experience in Charleston.
Upon leaving the Navy in 1991, Edwin attended the University of Tennessee–Knoxville, graduating in 1994 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. His long-term and primary professional interests have focused on verifying the reliability of I&C systems in nuclear power plants, which are necessary for their safe operation.
Aside from his professional work, some of Edwin’s hobbies include gardening, maintaining his 4-acre scenic property, playing piano and cooking.
“Overall, I could not have had a better career path and opportunity than provided by AMS,” says Edwin. “Hopefully, I will have another 10 years or more of service to the nuclear industry. I would like to see the new Vogtle AP1000 plants in Georgia start up in the next couple of years and also hope to play a role in developing suitable methods for verifying the performance of I&C systems for Small Modular Reactors such as NuScale.”
