On Thursday, June 27, 2019, AMS hosted a group of 17 middle school girls from the University of Tennessee’s “Adventures in STEM” summer camp. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) group, led by Dr. Anne Skutnik in the UTK College of Education, Health & Human Sciences, toured the AMS facilities and engaged in hands-on laboratory demonstrations ranging from basic electrical engineering concepts to specialized AMS technologies used for the verification of nuclear power plant safety systems.Highlights of the tour included demonstrations of static electricity and the artistic ability of electricity as it passes through wooden planks. The STEM group enjoyed a fun pizza lunch and engaged in thoughtful discussions regarding why they were interested in engineering and how they hoped to make the world a better place, whether through addressing climate change or space exploration. AMS engineers enjoyed spending time with the young women to share their own experiences and expertise to help foster excitement in engineering disciplines and showcase potential future opportunities for women pursuing careers in STEM professions.
