Following the recent passage of New York’s Clean Energy Standard designed to support the state’s nuclear energy program by providing power plants with necessary subsidies, Illinois recently announced the passage of the Future Energy Jobs Bill. This bill is designed to level the playing field between nuclear energy and other carbon-free energy sources. Illinois currently subsidizes wind energy at a rate of 2.3¢/kWh and solar at 21¢/kWh. The Future Energy Jobs Bills will provide Illinois’ nuclear plants with a limited subsidy of 1¢/kWh. This will allow two Illinois nuclear power plants to continue power production for at least another ten years, providing the state with at least 4,200 jobs and 22 billion kWh of annual carbon-free power.
